to the 3rd Meeting of the COST ACTION FP0801 WG3 and WG4

Established and Emerging Phytophthora:
Increasing Threats to Woodland and Forest Ecosystems in Europe

Universidade do Algarve, Faro, Portugal, September 10-12, 2009

This COST Action coordinates research tasks undertaken mainly at the national level in the COST partner countries, in order to develop greater understanding of the biology and management of Phytophthora species attacking forest trees.

This meeting will be held at the Auditoria Building 8 of the University of Algarve, Campus de Gambelas, in Faro. Faro is located 281 km south of Lisbon and is connected by high-way to Lisbon. Faro can also be reached by railway and plane. Airport is served by several major airlines.

The Faro meeting will engage scientists and decision-makers from across the Forestry Sector. The emphasis will be on furthering activities related to Working Group 3 and 4. Topics covered will include:

Working Group 3. Diagnostics

- Establish rapid diagnostic techniques for Phytophthora , including both Identification and quantification.

- Determine genetic variability in selected Phytophthora spp..

- Prepare a phylogeny of the genus Phytophthora, enabling prediction of the virulence of newly discovered species.

Working Group 4. Management and Control

- Collate current control methods available for use on trees.

- Examine further novel methods for controlling Phytophthora infections at the nursery, individual tree and landscape scales.

- Explore the utilization of environmentally friendly methods of control.
